In brief
A personal recount of witnessing Pope Francis, known for his gentle approach, navigate a politically charged atmosphere during a visit to Azerbaijan, revealing his remarkable character and the unexpected moments of connection with the local people.
During my time following Pope Francis on an official interfaith outreach tour several years ago, I had an experience that exemplified what true grace in difficult circumstances looks like. This was in Azerbaijan, a predominantly Muslim nation, and the visit took place at a time when the Catholic community there was minuscule. Despite their cultural differences, the warmth shown by the locals painted a contrast to the mixed feelings among other religious groups. As we arrived in Tbilisi, Georgia, protests erupted, with many holding signs expressing their disdain for the Pope. The backlash stemmed partly from his earlier remarks emphasizing acceptance around LGBTQ issues, which had ruffled feathers in a country where tradition runs deep. Local Orthodox priests who had planned to join him in prayer chose to snub him at the last moment. What struck me was one particular incident that revealed the Pope’s character amidst the unfolding drama. While participating in a procession towards a Catholic cathedral in Baku, a sudden gust of wind blew off Pope Francis’s zucchetta, a small cap he wears as a symbol of his papal authority. Pausing in that moment would have introduced a performative element to this interaction that felt uncomfortable given the weight of the occasion and the composed demeanor he was required to maintain. However, amidst the scrutiny of foreign journalists and local spectators, one musician from the military band noticed. With a sense of duty, he stepped forward, breaking protocol to pick up the zucchetta and place it back onto the Pope's head. For a fleeting moment, there was collective breath-holding among those present as we marvelled at the courage it took to act in a state where such spontaneity could lead to punishment. The Pope remained stoic, walking steadily as though impervious to the spectacle. The musician returned to his place, continuing his performance as if nothing had disrupted the flow. Something shifted within me during this incident. It was as though a barrier between the venerated leader and the imperfect world melted away.As observers, we found solace in the genuine humor and relief that followed, but more importantly, we bore witness to a demonstration of human decency that transcended expectations. It evoked a reflection on the essence of humanity, reminding us that connection and compassion can flourish even amid rigid structures. Pope Francis's visit, marked by its share of conflict, ultimately became an indelible lesson in grace, establishing a legacy much larger than one man’s role.
