In brief

Italy has initiated a new migration policy by transferring rescued Mediterranean migrants to Albania to process their asylum claims. While the Italian government views this as an innovative method to manage immigration, human rights groups have raised concerns regarding potential risks and rights violations for the migrants involved.

Italy has sent its first group of migrants to Albania from the Mediterranean, implementing a new strategy where asylum claims are processed in Albanian detention centers rather than Italy. The Italian government, alongside some European Union leaders, praises the approach as a pioneering solution to manage immigration flows towards Italian shores. However, the plan faces criticism from human rights organizations apprehensive about migrants' welfare and potential rights infringements. The detention facilities, located in Schengjin and Gjader, became operational recently, with Italy pledging to send only non-vulnerable men from safe countries to these sites. Vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant women, and the disabled, will be handled directly in Italy. Migrants in Albania will apply for asylum remotely, presenting their cases to Italian judges, with decisions expected within days, as stated by Italy's interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi.Francesco Kamel, a spokesman for Italy’s interior ministry, did not disclose specifics about the number or nationality of migrants aboard the Italian naval ship, which might continue its mission to collect more individuals off southern Italy. If asylum applications are denied, Albania will repatriate the migrants to their countries of origin, according to the agreement.
