In brief
As part of a contentious campaign, Iran has expelled approximately 800,000 Afghan refugees, with intense deportations increasing dramatically since June. The U.N. reports significant humanitarian concerns as returning Afghans face dire conditions.
Hundreds of thousands of Afghans are grappling with dire circumstances as they encounter a new wave of deportations from Iran. This effort has been notably aggressive since June, leading to the expulsion of around 800,000 individuals back to Afghanistan, a nation already struggling with extreme poverty and hardship. Babar Baloch, spokesperson for the United Nations refugee agency, reported that nearly 600,000 of these deportations occurred after June 1.The sudden surge in deportations has been fueled by heightened tensions following the recent war between Israel and Iran, during which Iranian officials have portrayed Afghans as potential spies. This perception has amplified fears and hostility towards the Afghan community in Iran, leading to a rapid increase in those crossing back into Afghanistan. In June alone, the flow reached a staggering average of 30,000 individuals per day, peaking at over 50,000 on certain occasions.Historically, Iran has hosted millions of Afghan refugees, with estimates suggesting the number has reached almost 3.5 million, primarily those escaping prolonged conflicts. However, the real figures may be larger due to a significant number of undocumented Afghans. Iranian officials maintain that valid document holders can still remain, but the stark reality indicates otherwise, as many who were forced to leave had been previously issued visas for entry.Arafat Jamal, the U.N. refugee agency representative in Kabul, described the current atmosphere as tumultuous. The urgency to deport Afghans amid the geopolitical climate has intensified, with little resistance to such actions. As the humanitarian implications unfold, the international community watches closely, concerned about the fate of the returning refugees within Afghanistan’s fraught landscape.
