In brief

Bhoomi Chauhan, a business administration student, found herself caught in traffic and missed her Air India flight by just 10 minutes—moments before the plane crashed in a devastating accident, highlighting the fragility of life and the unpredictability of travel.

Bhoomi Chauhan was swept with anger and frustration as she faced bumper-to-bumper traffic, which ultimately led her to miss her Air India flight to London Gatwick just 10 minutes before departure. The 28-year-old business administration student, residing in Bristol with her husband, had been enjoying a holiday in western India. She was scheduled to fly home on the ill-fated AI171 flight that tragically crashed shortly after take-off, resulting in the loss of 241 lives on board and even more on the ground.Arriving at Ahmedabad airport less than an hour before her flight's departure, airline staff informed Ms. Chauhan she could not complete her check-in process. "We were very angry with our driver and left the airport in frustration," she recounted. As she and her travel companion stopped to grab tea, they began discussing ticket refunds before receiving the shocking news of the plane crash. In her conversation with the BBC's Gujarati service, Chauhan exclaimed, "This is totally a miracle for me." Despite having checked in online and possessing a digital boarding pass for seat 36G, the delays caused by heavy traffic in Ahmedabad city prevented her from boarding. Reflecting on what happened, she said, "If I had started a little early, I would have boarded the plane."The tragedy of flight AI171, which struggled to gain altitude after taking off on Thursday afternoon, affected many families deeply. Notably, British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh survived the crash and received hospitalization for his injuries. The aftermath remains harrowing, with numerous emergency services working tirelessly to search debris and identify bodies, while grieving families seek answers. As investigations into the tragedy unfold, the incident underscores the unpredictable nature of travel and how quickly life can change, leaving survivors and loved ones to confront their new realities in its wake.
