In brief

A woman named Matilda Campbell becomes a viral sensation after her unusual hiking incident leads to a seven-hour rescue.

A young woman's hiking adventure took a perilous turn when she found herself trapped upside down between two boulders in New South Wales' picturesque Hunter Valley. Identified as Matilda Campbell, she fell into a three-metre crevice while attempting to retrieve her mobile phone, initiating an intense seven-hour rescue mission by the NSW Ambulance team. The dramatic event began earlier this month when Campbell lost her footing while navigating the rocky terrain. Emergency responders described the situation as “challenging,” especially since they had to maneuver several large boulders to create a safe environment for the rescue. Despite their efforts, Campbell remained stuck in an “S” shaped bend—her predicament already lasting over an hour before help arrived."Experiences like this are rare," shared Peter Watts, a paramedic who had never faced a rescue of this nature in his ten-year career. Crews worked meticulously to winch a massive 500kg rock away in order to access Campbell, who was clinging awkwardly by her feet amidst the boulders. The complicated rescue effort also included stabilizing the area to prevent further rock falls. Incredibly, after going through this harrowing ordeal, Campbell emerged with only minor scratches and bruises; however, she did not manage to secure her phone during the ordeal. Expressing her gratitude online, she thanked the emergency team saying, “You guys are literally life savers. Too bad about the phone tho." This unusual rescue has left a lasting impression on both the rescuers and the local community.
