Marco Rubio emphasizes U.S. commitment to Guyana during a press conference, highlighting concerns over Venezuela's claims to resourceful territories.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a stark warning on Thursday regarding Venezuela's territorial ambitions in a large region claimed by Guyana. During a press conference in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, Rubio stressed that the United States would respond decisively if Venezuela resorted to forceful means to assert its claims on resource-rich territories. This statement comes amid rising tensions, particularly as Venezuela sends naval vessels into contested waters linked to oil drilling operations initiated by ExxonMobil off the coast of Guyana.Rubio characterized the Venezuelan regime as engaging in “regional threats” and stated that there would be “consequences for adventurism” in the area. “Our partnership will be crucial in safeguarding the territorial integrity of our allies,” he announced, while standing alongside Guyanese President Irfaan Ali.The Essequibo region, which makes up roughly two-thirds of Guyana’s land area, has been the focal point of Venezuela’s claims in recent years, particularly as international interest in its offshore oil reserves has surged. While Rubio did not outline specific military actions, his emphasis on U.S. naval capabilities suggested that the possibility of military intervention has not been ruled out.President Ali expressed gratitude for the U.S.'s reassurance regarding Guyana's sovereignty, asserting the importance of international support in the face of Venezuelan aggression. The situation remains tense, as both nations grapple with historical disputes and modern geopolitical pressures surrounding oil resources.
