Authorities reported that a gunman, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, entered the office building at 345 Park Avenue around 6:30 PM on Monday evening, brandishing an MR rifle. As pedestrians nearby fled for safety, chaos unfolded inside as employees and visitors sought refuge, barricading themselves behind furniture amidst the sound of gunfire.
Officer Didarul Islam, who was securing the building at the time, was among the deceased. His heroic actions during the attack were praised by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who stated the officer died "as he lived - a hero." The other three victims are still being identified.
Surveillance footage revealed Tamura entered the building and immediately began firing in the lobby, targeting people at random. He shot Officer Islam first and continued firing as people attempted to hide. After moving to an upper floor, he shot once more before tragically taking his own life.
Tamura had traveled from Las Vegas, with authorities researching his background and mental health history to uncover a possible motive for his violent rampage. Investigators also discovered multiple rounds of ammunition in his vehicle, which was registered in Nevada.
The incident brought a halt to parts of Midtown and public transport, causing significant panic and fear in the area. Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos as emergency responders flooded the scene, evacuating many frightened individuals. Local coffee shop employee Mama Bouhenni described the terrifying scene as neighbors were escorted out with their hands raised.
As the investigation progresses, the community mourns the loss of life and the unwavering sacrifice made by Officer Islam in his efforts to protect others.
