In brief
Amid a government crackdown, thousands of backers of former Prime Minister Imran Khan marched toward Islamabad on Monday, leading to violent clashes with police. Khan, in prison since August 2023, faces multiple charges that his supporters claim are politically motivated.
Thousands of supporters rallied for the release of Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, amid a heavy police presence and a governmental lockdown in the capital city, Islamabad, on Monday evening. The protesters demonstrated resilience as they removed shipping containers that authorities had placed to block their entrance. The march took place against a backdrop of heightened political tension, fueled by claims from Khan's supporters. The former prime minister, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 and currently faces over 150 criminal cases, continues to maintain a significant support base. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (P.T.I.), argues that the charges are an attempt to stifle political dissent and suppress the party's influence.Khan has consistently alleged that both the military and current government are working in tandem to undermine democracy and orchestrate political suppression. The authorities, on the other hand, maintain that the protests are an attempt to create chaos and have labeled Khan as someone who seeks to evade accountability. In a rallying call to his supporters on Sunday, Khan urged them to converge on the capital, calling for his release, fresh elections, and a repeal of recent amendments that have limited judicial powers. Empowered by Khan’s leadership, thousands of demonstrators, guided by key figures such as his wife, Bushra Bibi, and chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, embarked on their journey from Peshawar. As they approached Islamabad, confrontations broke out in Attock, about 50 miles from the capital, where police utilized tear gas to disperse the crowds. Tragically, officials reported that at least one police officer lost their life during the clashes amid the growing unrest.
