In brief

Tarcila Rivera-Zea, rooted in her Quechua past, transforms her struggles into advocacy for Indigenous women, focusing on economic opportunities and voice recognition.

Tarcila Rivera-Zea, a prominent figure in the Quechua community of Peru, stands as a testament to resilience and empowerment for Indigenous women. Over the years, she has dedicated her life to advocating for the rights and opportunities of Native peoples, echoing the challenges she faced in her childhood.Born in the Peruvian Andes, Tarcila’s early years were marked by isolation and poverty. With her entire existence revolving around her Quechua community, her education was limited due to language barriers; the only school nearby was conducted in Spanish. After just one year, she left school unable to communicate effectively with teachers or peers. “I used to have one piece of clothing, a dress, for the whole year,” she recalls, illustrating the harsh reality of her upbringing where shoes were a luxury and maize and potatoes constituted her daily diet. The shift in her life narrative came at age 10 when her mother sent her to Lima to live with her father, who had recently relocated to the city for work. This new environment opened doors for Tarcila, allowing her to enroll in a public school where she could finally learn Spanish. The transition was a critical turning point, laying the groundwork for her eventual mission. At 74, Tarcila has turned her experiences into a drive to uplift other Indigenous women. She actively seeks to amplify their voices, create economic opportunities, and advocate for greater recognition of their rights. Her motivations are profoundly personal; the derogatory comments from her father’s family regarding her mixed heritage fueled her determination to forge a pathway for others facing similar challenges. Through her tireless work, Tarcila Rivera-Zea continues to be a beacon of hope for many in her community, championing the need for visibility and empowerment among Indigenous women in Peru and beyond.
