In brief

For a decade, an underground church in Nairobi dedicated to L.G.B.T.Q. worshippers has moved through numerous locations due to hostility and violence. Now, they've established a secret sanctuary, enabling individuals from perilous backgrounds to gather and worship freely.

For nearly ten years, the only church in Kenya that caters to L.G.B.T.Q. individuals has continually faced displacement from multiple sites due to persistent harassment. Initial gatherings at a sex workers’ shelter were targeted by vandals, culminating in subsequent harassment at various locations, including arrests by law enforcement and even violent attacks from neighbors. Yet, this resilient congregation has ultimately established a clandestine sanctuary where acceptance prevails.Recently, in a discreet room on a quiet street, Pastor Caroline Omolo energized a gathering of around 100 worshippers. Upon screening attendees for security, she delivered a heartfelt sermon that resonated with the struggles of many present. “Family may cast you out, and traditional faith institutions might not recognize your existence,” she declared, igniting murmurs of understanding throughout the congregation. “But here, you’ve found a place in the Bible. Praise the Lord!”The collective response was a powerful "Amen," illustrating the profound impact of this sanctuary. Many participants have fled severe persecution in their home countries, where being openly L.G.B.T.Q. poses fatal risks. This weekly gathering has become a vital opportunity for them to embrace both their spiritual beliefs and their authentic identities in a nurturing environment, transforming worship into an affirming celebration of life. This hidden church stands as a testament to resilience and community, where faith and identity interweave, reflecting both the trials faced by its members and the sanctuary they have cultivated through adversity.
