In brief
The Buz Stop Boys, a grassroots initiative formed in July 2023 by civil engineer Heneba Kwadwo Sarfo, is mobilizing young professionals and citizens in Greater Accra to tackle the pervasive waste management crisis in Ghana. With approximately 12,700 tonnes of solid waste generated daily, only 10% of which is properly disposed of, the group places an emphasis on fostering civic pride and environmental health. Sarfo, who founded the movement with just five members, now leads over 40 volunteers comprising midwives, carpenters, and military personnel, who come together two to four times a week to clear clogged drains, gutters, and public spaces.
The movement has received widespread recognition and support, including notable endorsements from Ghanaian celebrities like musician Sister Derby and dancehall star Shatta Wale, who praised their commitment and helped raise funds through social media platforms. The clean-up efforts also received a boost from UK students who traveled to Accra specifically to assist in the initiative, demonstrating a global solidarity with the cause.Despite receiving backing from various politicians and the community, Sarfo emphasizes the need for grassroots action rather than waiting for government intervention. His message resonates with many Ghanaians, as he highlights the direct impact of environmental degradation on their livelihoods. As the movement gains momentum, the Buz Stop Boys continue to inspire a renewed sense of responsibility and civic engagement across the nation.
