In brief

Authorities are on high alert after at least 10 people were killed due to the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, located on Flores island. The disaster underscores the ongoing threat posed by Indonesia's numerous active volcanoes.

Officials in eastern Indonesia reported that the recent volcanic eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki resulted in at least 10 fatalities and forced many residents to evacuate. The eruption occurred late on Sunday and lasted for more than 24 minutes, followed by several additional eruptions into the night. The volcano released a smoke column that reached 300 meters by Monday morning, according to the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.Witnesses describe a terrifying scene as the eruption triggered numerous earthquakes in the region, compounding fears among the local population. The National Agency for Disaster Management confirmed that emergency responders have retrieved nine bodies, while one more is believed to be buried under debris. The eruption profoundly affected seven nearby villages, displacing thousands of residents.Rescue operations commenced promptly, particularly in Klatanlo, one of the hardest-hit villages. The Indonesian government has issued warnings, advising residents to maintain a safe distance of over seven kilometers from the volcano due to heightened volcanic activity and the risk of further earthquakes.Indonesia’s position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" exposes it to significant geological activity, including some of the most dangerous volcanic eruptions recorded in history. In 2023, over 20 casualties were reported when another Indonesian volcano, Mount Marapi, erupted.According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has exhibited escalating volcanic activity, having erupted 43 times since late October. Recent explosions have launched ash clouds as high as 800 meters, signaling the need for ongoing vigilance. In light of these developments, authorities are closely monitoring the situation in an effort to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of the affected communities.
