Mali's military leaders announced the arrest of French citizen Yann Vezilier, accusing him of espionage and involvement in a conspiracy to destabilize the country. During a national television address, Security Minister Gen Daoud Aly Mohammedine claimed Vezilier was acting "on behalf of the French intelligence service." The allegations come amid efforts to thwart a coup that has seen multiple army generals and at least 55 individuals arrested.

The case has sparked interest, particularly since Vezilier’s image was broadcast alongside detained military officials, including Gen Abass Dembele, a prominent figure recently removed from his governorship. Gen Mohammedine emphasized that the coup attempt was a collaboration between "fringe elements" of the Malian military and foreign entities.

Amid increasing political instability, criticism of the ruling military government has grown, particularly surrounding the jailings of former Prime Ministers Moussa Mara and Choguel Maïga, who have faced accusations of damaging the state's reputation. The military junta's decision to dissolve political parties and extend its transition period, which already delayed promised elections after power seizures in 2020 and 2021, has drawn ire from local populations and international observers alike.

Mali's situation worsened after a significant rise in jihadist attacks threatening national security. In a drastic shift in alliances, Mali has leaned on Russian support, moving away from its historical ties with France in an effort to combat the rising insurgency and restore stability. However, security improvements remain elusive.
