In brief

The bombardment serves as a reminder of Ukraine's striking capabilities, coinciding with diplomatic efforts towards peace talks.

Following a series of extensive drone strikes just before dawn Tuesday, Ukraine marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict with Russia. The targets included the Moscow region, demonstrating Ukraine's ability to penetrate deep into Russian territory as both nations ramp up military operations in advance of proposed peace talks. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that it had intercepted and shot down a substantial number of drones—337 in total—with around 91 directed specifically at the capital. Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, stated this assault was the most considerable faced by the city since the conflict commenced, resulting in at least two fatalities and 14 injuries, as confirmed by Russian officials. Damage to infrastructure was evident, with one residential building in Moscow sustaining significant damage after a drone detonation. Consequently, all four international airports serving the capital, which is home to 21 million residents, were forced to halt operations temporarily as a precautionary measure. In response to the growing military exchanges, Ukraine has proposed an immediate ceasefire concerning aerial assaults, pledging to cease its long-range operations into Russian territory in return for a similar commitment from Moscow. This proposition, which has garnered support from several European nations, including France, aims to foster trust and set the groundwork for more comprehensive discussions aimed at achieving a resolution to the prolonged conflict that has resulted in heavy losses on both sides.
