In brief

In a chilling recount during a Paris court trial, former headteacher Audrey F expressed her regrets over the circumstances that led to the beheading of Samuel Paty, a popular history and geography teacher. Paty was murdered in October 2020 outside his school by Abdoullakh Anzorov, an 18-year-old Chechen refugee, following a series of events ignited by misleading allegations from a student.

Audrey F testified about how the drama unfolded, starting with a false claim made by a 13-year-old student, identified only as Z, who misrepresented a classroom discussion on freedom of expression. The girl's father, angered by the misconceptions, approached the headteacher’s office alongside a local Islamist activist, demanding action against Paty. The event took a tragic turn when Audrey F recounted that, despite her attempts to alleviate the escalating concerns, tensions grew overwhelmingly. Paty's lesson had involved discussing cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, deemed offensive in Islam, but his approach had been inclusive, allowing anyone who felt uncomfortable to leave.Increasingly alarmed by the reactions, Audrey F sought police assistance for Paty after online videos portrayed the teacher as a "blasphemer." However, Paty chose to remain in school, leading to the horrific incident on October 16 where he was brutally attacked.Eight individuals are currently on trial for their roles in the murder, with Audrey F reflecting in court that the community's response exacerbated the situation. She conveyed a sense of sorrow for failing to protect her colleague and hopes for justice to help her and others find closure amidst the tragedy that has deeply shaken France.
