In a harrowing incident highlighting the ongoing violence in Mexico, five musicians from the regional band, Grupo Fugitivo, were found murdered, following their abduction in Reynosa, a city close to the US border. The musicians, aged between 20 and 40, were last seen on May 25 while en route to a private event. Their families reported receiving ransom demands shortly after their disappearance.
Tamaulipas state attorney general, Irving Barrios Mojica, announced that nine individuals associated with the infamous Gulf Cartel have been arrested in connection with the murders. Investigators are currently working to uncover the motive behind this tragic incident, with the musicians well-known for performing at local celebrations and dances.
Authorities seized nine firearms and two vehicles during the arrests, marking a significant move against organized crime in the region. The victims frequently played corridos, a type of regional Mexican music known for its narratives surrounding drug cartels and their figures. It remains uncertain if their musical affiliations led to their targeting, or if they were merely caught in the crossfire of broader cartel violence that has plagued Tamaulipas.
The Gulf Cartel, one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in Mexico, has been labeled a "global terrorist organization" by the Trump administration. Highlighting the risks associated with travel to this region, a level 4 travel advisory was issued by the US embassy earlier this year, urging caution due to prevalent crime and the threat of kidnappings. The advisory pointed out the rampant armed violence that locals face, particularly in areas like Reynosa, where criminal groups operate largely unchecked.
