In brief

Iranian state media has reported that an Israeli airstrike on Evin Prison in Tehran resulted in the death of 71 individuals, including detainees and prison staff. This incident has raised concerns for the families of political prisoners amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

Iranian state-run outlets disclosed on June 29 that an Israeli bombardment on Evin Prison led to the loss of 71 lives, an act that has heightened concerns over human rights violations in the country. The infamous prison, located in Tehran, is known for detaining political dissidents and activists critical of the Iranian regime.A judicial spokesman, Asghar Jahangir, confirmed the fatalities but did not name any victims, which has worried families of the detainees who have remained out of contact since the incident on June 23. Evin Prison houses numerous political prisoners, including journalists, lawyers, and opposition figures, alongside foreign nationals accused of espionage.Rights organizations have previously highlighted the prison's alleged record of abusive conditions, encompassing torture and executions. Following the strike, the Israeli Defense Ministry refrained from comment, while the military could not be reached for verification of Iranian claims. This attack was part of a broader military campaign by Israel aimed at different sites linked to Iran's power structure during the recent escalation, which spanned twelve days and concluded with a ceasefire. Iranian health authorities reported over 600 casualties in total due to the conflict, emphasizing the ramifications of the sustained violence. In the aftermath of the strike, it was reported that the prison’s chief prosecutor, Ali Ghanaatkar, was among the fatalities. Ghanaatkar has been instrumental in prosecuting several high-profile dissidents, including Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi and British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliff, further complicating the situation for those imprisoned within these walls.
