In brief

Three years into the Russia-Ukraine War, parents and educators are pushing back against pervasive state propaganda in schools by employing various tactics to protect children's perceptions and education.

In the face of Russia's prolonged military engagement in Ukraine, a significant movement among parents and educators has emerged, focusing on protecting children from state-sponsored patriotic education. Many families are adopting creative methods, including crafting fake school schedules or opting for homeschooling, to counteract the incessant flow of war-related propaganda filling classrooms. Varvara, a St. Petersburg mother with four children, expressed the challenges faced in this endeavor. "You constantly have to play cat-and-mouse with the school," she noted, indicating the relentless nature of the situation. Instances of glorifying military actions have surfaced, such as music competitions featuring war-themed songs and school excursions to hear pro-Kremlin narratives by veterans. These initiatives began shortly after President Vladimir Putin's introduction of "patriotic education" in early 2022, aiming to instill a sense of loyalty to Russia amid its full-scale invasion. Initially perceived as an initiative confined to economically struggling regions with low educational standards, the state’s indoctrination efforts have permeated schools nationwide. Critics, including concerned parents and education analysts, assert that this systematic pushing of a singular narrative has deeply affected the educational landscape. As resistance grows, many individuals remain determined to shield the younger generation from heavy-handed propaganda and to foster an environment where diverse perspectives can thrive.
