In brief

Despite a court ruling intended to restore critical funding for global health initiatives, the Trump administration's actions continue to jeopardize aid efforts across Africa and Asia.

Funds designated for essential health initiatives are currently in limbo, even after a federal judge intervened to pause the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D.). Reports from health workers in several countries reveal alarming consequences of this funding freeze. In Kenya, parents struggle to get their children tested for tuberculosis, while camps in Nigeria and Bangladesh suffer from a lack of clean drinking water for displaced individuals. Furthermore, a therapeutic food program in South Sudan is unable to assist malnourished children.Maleket Hailu, who oversees an HIV support organization in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, shared the struggles faced by those reliant on U.S.A.I.D. funding. “People are traveling great distances just to find medications,” he lamented. "U.S.A.I.D. was instrumental in sourcing and distributing these essential supplies, and now the situation is dire." Though a State Department spokesperson announced the issuance of over 180 waivers to permit crucial activities to resume, those efforts have largely been stymied. Sources from over 40 U.S.A.I.D.-supported groups report that, even with waivers, they are unable to access funds, as the payment system used by U.S.A.I.D. has been inoperative for weeks. This disruption significantly hinders many organizations, predominantly nonprofits that rely solely on these grants.Typically, these organizations operate on a quick-fund turnaround model, receiving financial support in small increments based on immediate project needs. With no funds flowing, they face unprecedented challenges in continuing their life-saving work.
