In brief

The conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, with casualties mounting on both sides after a series of retaliatory strikes.

In a rapidly escalating conflict, Iranian missile strikes have led to the deaths of at least eight individuals in various cities across Israel, local authorities confirmed on June 16, 2025. This surge of violence comes on the heels of intensive Israeli military actions targeting Iran's military capabilities as the fighting enters its fourth day with no resolution in sight.Four victims from the latest strikes were reported in Petah Tikva, where a missile impacted a residential block. Additional casualties include three fatalities in Haifa and an 80-year-old man who succumbed to injuries when his home collapsed in Bnei Brak, following shock waves from an attack nearby. Petah Tikva resident Sigal Kovalski, 47, witnessed the destruction of her apartment, stating, “The windows were broken, the floor was covered with shattered glass and the furniture was in pieces,” as she revealed the aftermath of the explosion.Around 100 individuals suffered injuries throughout central Israel, including Haifa and Tel Aviv, as search and rescue efforts continued, according to the national emergency service, Magen David Adom. Furthermore, Iranian missiles targeted Israel's largest oil refinery situated in Haifa Bay, sparking significant fires and necessitating urgent rescue operations for those trapped. The conflict erupted last Friday following an Israeli airstrike on Iran, marking the most intense violence between these two nations in decades. An air raid on Tehran resulted in both casualties and damage to critical infrastructure, leading to a marked decline in internet connectivity within Iran that has hindered many from reaching emergency services or the outside world. The ongoing hostilities have reportedly led to the death of at least 224 individuals in Iran, with casualties including senior Iranian military leaders, and over 1,400 injured. In contrast, retaliatory Iranian attacks have resulted in the deaths of 21 civilians in Israel, as the situation continues to unfold with alarming implications for regional stability, raising concerns about potential wider involvement from global powers such as the United States.
