In brief

The earthquake that struck Myanmar has ignited urgent concerns over humanitarian assistance, overshadowed by the country's longstanding political turmoil and isolation. As international efforts to provide aid commence, the military-led government has made a unique appeal for assistance, underscoring the dire need for support amid the growing crisis.

On March 28, 2025, military spokesperson Gen. Zaw Min Tun publicly requested aid, stating, “We need and want the international community to provide humanitarian aid. We will cooperate with them to ensure the best care for the victims.” This plea comes against the backdrop of Myanmar's isolation, particularly since a coup in 2021 triggered widespread sanctions from the U.S. and many Western nations.Despite these sanctions having exemptions for humanitarian efforts, the United Nations is mobilizing resources to assist affected populations. The challenge, however, lies in the country's complicated internal strife and logistics. Michael Martin, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed out the significant risks faced by international aid workers, particularly regarding safety and accessibility to regions impacted by the earthquake.Concerns arise that the military could obstruct aid delivery, particularly to areas controlled by rebel forces or potential beneficiaries of humanitarian assistance. “The military could slow the process by repackaging aid or delaying visas for relief workers,” Martin commented. As local and international organizations seek to respond to immediate needs, the complex interplay of Myanmar’s political dynamics and humanitarian imperatives poses a significant barrier to effective relief efforts.
